History - Past and Now
GCR's history and the current operation interest me. The railway was built by Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company in 1901 and started the operation, but the actual operation was stopped in 1968 due to US's rapid motorization in '60s. However it reopend the operation in 1989. Currently the train runs everyday, between Williams and Grand Canyon once a day operated by Grand Canyon Railway owned by Xanterra Parks & Resorts of Denver, Colorado since 2006. Several times in the peak season, the steam locomotive is back to operation. This is one of the successful train revival story we see not only in US but also in other parts of the world like Europe and Japan.
Train
The train departs from Williams at 9:30AM and arrives at Grand Canyon at 11:45AM.
The return train departs the Grand Canyon at 3:30PM and arrives at Williams at 5:45PM.
The line has grades up to 3%.
The maximum speed is 40mph (64km/h).
The engine and passenger cars:
- Engine: EMD F40FH #237
- Cars: 6 cars (the pictures below taken in January 2014)
Note: the steam locomotive #4960-powered excursion is scheduled on June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, and September 21 in 2014.
Wye
There is a wye at Grand Canyon station to reverse the direction of the engine and the passenger cars. The reverse operation is conducted before arriving Grand Canyon station.
In Japan, Wye is called "delta line" or "triangle line", that can be seen in some places at Tokyo area, e.g. Shingawa, Ohsaki, and Dakubo Singal Point.
Smile
The engineer waved his hand just after departing Grand Canyon station.
